In the early 1980’s, as a simple heartfelt gesture to honor their parents, Jack, Jimmy, and Doug Guynn established a scholarship fund in their parents’ name. The N. Carroll and Grace B. Guynn Scholarship Fund has thrived in the care of the Community Foundation. Today, it yields a $2,500 annual college scholarship for a senior at Wilson Memorial High School, with the amount of the award steadily increasing as the account grows. The Community Foundation manages over 80 such funds, offering people ways to pay tribute to friends and family, as well as to provide on-going support for programs and services that benefit the larger community. “By going in together, we were able to set up a modest fund. It isn’t the largest one out there, but it is something we’re proud of,” says Jack Guynn. Several years ago, the brothers agreed to contribute to the fund in lieu of trading gifts at Christmas and other celebrations. More recently, some of their children have followed suit; Jack Guynn recalls his delight when his son added a donation in Jack’s name as a birthday present. In the spirit of family giving, both of Jimmy's children have also contributed to the fund. Jimmy adds that the Community Foundation helped him and his brothers design a fund that “gives back to the community that gave much to us.”
