Youth Philanthropy Grants
The Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC) is a youth-focused and youth-administered committee operating as a grant-making board, under the direction of the Community Foundation. Students from each area high school (Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County & Highland County) with potential leadership skills and an interest in community service are selected by their principals and/or guidance counselors. The Youth Philanthropy Council was established in the fall of 2008 after it was noted that 63% of the Community Foundation’s annual competitive grants were awarded to youth programs. The initial goals were and continue to be:
- Promote youth development and empowerment through experiences of philanthropy
- Encourage and support community initiatives about which youth care, recognizing youth as a community resource
- Engage youth and adults in partnership through giving and serving for the common good
The Youth Philanthropy Council of the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge announces the availability of $10,000 in grant funding to support projects addressing the needs of youth in our region. The Youth Philanthropy Council will accept grant requests up to $7,500 from local nonprofits with programs addressing youth needs. We are particularly interested in receiving proposals from organizations that provide opportunities for teens to make healthy choices that will have a positive impact on their future lives, as well as organizations dedicated to educating teens about the choices before them and providing them with the guidance they may need to make healthy choices.
The Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge Youth Philanthropy Council also encourages applications that include partnerships between local charitable organizations and partnerships between publicly supported agencies and local non-profits.
TIMEFRAME: Grant award notifications will be made on or before May 1, 2014. Grant funding will be distributed by June 1, 2014. Proposals should reflect a one-year completion date (i.e. Start date of July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015).
REVIEW PROCESS: Members of the Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC) of CFCBR consist of nineteen area high school students from Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County, and Highland County. The YPC will review each complete application and evaluate based on the effectiveness of meeting the identified needs, interagency partnerships or other creative partnering, and long-term sustainability.
